Our History
In 1993, Extended Sisters was the first support group organized to address the issues of African American women newly diagnosed with HIV. Locally, there was no support system in place; women were traveling 90 miles to Atlanta, for the support group at Ponce De Leon Infection Disease Clinic and those who were less fortunate with transportation were sent home to die. During this organizational period, individuals were inexperience, fearful, lack community support and traveled to SisterLove, Inc. and AIDS Atlanta for guidance. Volunteers utilized their own resources to make a difference. This support group, now known as the SISTAs Educational Group provides educational seminars, client assistance, and “friend girl” buddy program for women.
As the years endured the focus shifted to the entire family in promoting wellness. Building on our experience working in rural Georgia and Columbus Wellness Center Outreach and Prevention Project Center’s history in teen pregnancy prevention in West Georgia Central Health District 7, we have established a network of innovative partnership rural agencies and faith based organizations. While our agency is in various stages of our prevention practices, all exhibit strong evidence of fostering high levels of teen engagements, community outreach and collaboration.
